Entre 2015 et 2018, Jacob Lund, professeur d’esthétique et de culture à l’Université d’Aarhus au Danemark et récemment professeur invité à l’Université Paris 8 (nov. 2018) a développé un programme de recherche sous le titre “The Contemporary Condition”. Ce titre résonne bien évidemment et de manière spécifique à nos oreilles, avec son allusion évidente au livre paradigmatique ( La Condition postmoderne ) de Jean-François Lyotard, figure tutélaire de notre université. Ce programme couronnait en quelque sorte un vaste mouvement d’enquête internationale et interdisciplinaire sur la nature du temps ou des temps que nous vivons, sur l’historicité de notre époque, sur la définition de notre présent et au-delà sur celle du présent.

Ce mouvement avait été ouvert, si on souhaite lui donner une origine, dix ans plus tôt par Giorgio Agamben dans son iconique petit ouvrage Qu’est-ce que le contemporain ? et sétait déployé, de manière inédite, sur toute la surface du globe et dans un nombre de champs disciplinaires inédit.

Ce déploiement, Jacob Lund et son équipe ont tenté de le ressaisir dans une passionnante collection d’ouvrages, comptant onze volumes à ce jour, parus chez Sternberg Press :

Aussi remarquable que cette collection soit, elle demeure bien évidemment et comme toute collection, incomplète, partielle, et partiale. Il nous est apparu, lors de la visite de Jacob Lund qu’il serait passionnant de la soumettre à une enquête collective menée par des doctorant-es en arts, en sciences humaines et en sciences sociales de notre université pour cartographier ce

qu’il manque encore à la modélisation de la “condition contemporaine”. Et pourquoi pas de proposer un nouveau volume issu de l’atelier.

 

Cet atelier est destiné aux doctorant-es des ED “Pratiques et théories du sens”, “Esthétique, sciences et technologies des arts” et de l’EUR ArTeC. Il consistera d’abord en un groupe de lecture se réunissant trois fois (31/01, 8/02 et 15/02) avant une journée de restitution et de propositions en présence de Jacob Lund et de doctorant-es de l’Université d’Aarhus le 22 février au Centre National de la Danse à Pantin.

Between 2015 and 2018, Jacob Lund, professor of esthetics and culture at Aarhus University in Denmark and recent visiting professor at the University of Paris 8 (November 2018), developed a research project called “The Contemporary Condition.” This title resonates particularly strongly here at Paris 8, with its allusion to the paradigm-defining book The Postmodern Condition by Jean-François Lyotard, one of our university’s historic tenured professors. This project is, in some ways, a key part of a larger conversation comprised of wide-ranging studies, both national and international. These studies focus on the nature of time or our specific times, on the historicity of our current moment, and on the definitions and potentials of the present . If we want to locate this movement’s origins, we could say that it began ten years earlier, with Giorgio Agamben’s iconic work What is the contemporary ? , and has continued to surface, often in unexpected ways, in a variety of places and disciplines.

As remarkable as this collection is, it is also, as is any collection, incomplete, partial, and representative of a limited number of viewpoints. During Jacob Lund’s time at Paris 8, we became invested in the idea of opening the collection to a collective study, led by doctoral candidates in arts, humanities, and social sciences. The aim of this study would be a cartography of the collection’s missing parts, a map of what isn’t yet there in the existing model of the “contemporary condition.” And why not use the workshop to collectively write a proposal for a new volume ?

The workshop is oriented towards doctoral candidates in the doctoral schools “Pratiques et théories du sens,” “Esthétique, sciences et technologies des arts” and the ArTeC laboratory. It consists of practical reading and discussion sessions, meeting on three dates (25/1, 8/2 and 15/2). The workshop culminates in a day of presentation and synthesis on the 22nd of February, at the Centre National de la Danse in Pantin, with Jacob Lund and doctoral students working with him at Aarhus University.
